Winnipeg’s police chief says he was honoured by an invitation to attend the funeral of Christine Wood.
The 21-year-old woman’s body was found on a farmer’s field east of Winnipeg June 1 and put to rest in her home community of Oxford House, Man. on Sunday.
Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak Grand Chief Sheila North Wilson, a relative of Wood’s, extended the invitation to chief Danny Smyth to attend the funeral.
On Facebook, North Wilson wrote Smyth’s presence at the funeral was what “reconciliation looks like.”
Smyth said he was touched by the very fact he was asked to be there.
“I thought that was pretty special in and of itself,” said Smyth. “For me it was important to go up and really put a face to the tragedy.”
Winnipeg police began working with Wood’s parents in 2016 when their daughter went missing.
