Some restaurants have a following. It’s the chef. It’s the food. It’s the ambience. But when all those elements align, a restaurant transcends having a mere following and inspires cult-like loyalty.

Nobu is one of those places. Chef Frank Gorriceta spent 14 years cooking under the guidance of famed chef/restaurateur Nobu Matsuhisa. During his tenure with the great chef, Gorriceta learned a lot. But Nobu’s best teaching might have been as simple as advice to hit the road: “I ask chef, ‘How did you think of this?’ And he says, ‘I just travel. If you have a chance, go, travel,’ ” says Gorriceta.
