Sen. Josh Newman recall gains traction – Orange County Register

The recall of freshman state Sen. Josh Newman has gotten off to a strong start in making the ballot, with recall proponents announcing Friday, June 2, that they’d collected more than half of the 63,592 signatures needed in the first month of circulating petitions.

They have until Oct. 16 to finish the job, which would mean a November or December special recall election.

Recall proponents are upset with the Gov. Jerry Brown’s $52-billion transportation package approved by the Legislature in April. The plan will be paid for by a new 12-cent per gallon gas tax and a vehicle license hike of about $50 for the average car. A separate effort for a statewide initiative to repeal those increases is in the nascent stages — the successful recall of Newman would not change the spending package and tax hikes.
